A total of 300,000 or more people die each year simply because they are overweight. This means that they succumbed to illnesses which were directly caused by their having a BMI that is higher than is recommended by nutritionists. People who are overweight also struggle with issues such as chronic fatigue, sleeping disorders, risk of heart diseases and also low self esteem which is amplified by the general media in that it portrays the skinny models or males with six-packs as being the ideal standard.</p>
<p>There are a few ways you can take to win the battle against weight gain. One of them is exercise. A sizeable number of people are overweight because they live a sedentary lifestyle, that is, a life that is devoid of exercise or much physical exertion. Nowhere is that so than in the US where there is a vehicle for every two people and people prefer to drive even for ridiculously short distances. This, coupled with a junk food society, causes people to become overweight easily. Enrolling in a gym is ideal because it helps you shed the excess weight. In case your budget does not allow you to enroll in a quality fitness club, you can easily take matters into your own hands and jog on your own or simply walk around the block.</p>
<p>Eating right is also a great way to fight weight gain. Choosing foods that have low fats and low carbohydrates is the way to smart shopping.</p>

<p>Belly fat is brought about by various factors. One of them is cholesterol intake that surpasses the ability of the body to burn it and convert it into energy. The excess cholesterol is then converted to fat and stored in the belly. Another reason is obviously excessive eating and failing to watch what one eats. It has been documented that about 300,000 people die each year due to excessive weight or obesity related complications. This refers to people from a cross section of society who have a BMI or body mass index of 25-29 which  many experts consider being overweight. Obesity now affects over 25% of the US population and more and more people are realizing that obesity kills. People that are overweight struggle with sleep problems, breathing problems, susceptibility to disease and illness, chronic fatigue not to mention a low self-esteem because the media depicts people who are obese as abnormal and those that are skinny as the ideal.</p>
<p>Obesity is brought about by a number of reasons. One of them is eating more than the body is breaking down through the normal body metabolism. This causes excess fat to accumulate in many cases in the belly area and cause someone to be overweight. Then there are people that are overweight not because they over-eat, but because they have a genetic malfunction which causes their overall body metabolism to slow and food to be digested slowly. Others get overweight because of a combination of all of the above not to mention the contributing factor of a sedentary lifestyle. This means a life that is devoid of exercise and little movement. In the US, a lot of people live this life because of using their vehicles even for short distances. But there are some exercise that one can embark on to battle weight gain.</p>
<p>Running is one of the exercises that one can get into to combat obesity. In most places, enrolling in a gym is not even necessary. One can run in their neighborhood or compound. Walking is another and a much better way to get started on your weight loss trek. This does not involve much just 20 minutes a day. You can increase this as you get in better shape.</p>

Obesity is measured in what is called body mass index or BMI according to the fitness and medical circles. BMI is arrived at by dividing weight by height and then squaring the result. A BMI of 25-29kg/m is considered overweight.</p>
<p>Obesity can be dangerous. Medical research shows that the chances of a heart attack are exponentially increased the higher the BMI goes. People who are overweight also struggle with a myriad of other complications. For instance, obese people also have to deal with a low self-esteem because the general mass media pushes the image of the slim model as the ideal. Clothes are also had to find and one has to shop at special stores. More problems include sleep irregularities and the risk of a stroke.</p>
<p>How does diet help? Researchers and nutritionists report that there is a correlation between weight loss and dieting. Education is key. Reading the labels when shopping is recommended. There are some foods which have a higher calorie content than others and knowing this will put one in the right track. By education, we also mean that you should familiarize yourself with the food pyramid. <p>It is doubtful that anyone does. Yes, there are other diet plans out there that have a lot of merit to them, and if a diet is the way you want to go, then researching the different ones out there is very advisable so that you can find a reasonable, sensible diet plan that is not going to harm you or make you go crazy with hunger, causing you to fail in the end anyway.</p>
<p>The Downsides of Dieting</p>

<li>Fad Diets – These diets usually consist of removing one food group entirely from your diet or drinking an unusual mixture of ingredients to get you to lose weight. Not only can these be unhealthy and dangerous at times, they can leave you feeling hungry or drained from not enough nutrients. In the end, even if you do lose some weight at first, these diets usually fail because they are too restrictive and as soon as you stop them you wind up gaining all the weight back, plus more sometimes.</li>
<li>Counting Calories – Sometimes counting every little calorie we take in is very bothersome and frustrating to people. Because of this, some people may give up on their diet altogether.</li>
<li>Eating Too Little – Dieting for some people means just eating very little. If you do not follow a proper diet plan, and think that just not eating is the way to lose weight, you will quickly find out that besides being very hungry you will not feel good at all because you are not getting enough nutrients. You are also confusing your body’s metabolism with this starving method – it might not make you lose weight much at first as your body starts to store all the fat it can when you do eat. Plus, on the serious side, if you do this extremely enough and long enough, you could wind up in the hospital.</li>

<p>Try to eat vegetables at almost every meal.  Vegetables are some of the best foods to eat when trying to lose weight.  Make sure that you eat a wide variety of vegetables.  Include as many green leafy vegetables as possible.  Try to eat a salad twice a day for lunch and dinner at least.</p>

If you have ever paid attention to the experts when they talk about improving your health, you will notice that there are two things that always seem to pop up: diet and exercise. There is no question that what you choose to eat and how much exercise you get, plays a major role in your health.</p>
<p>All kinds of analogies are used when talking about the human body, but one of the most fitting for our purposes has to be comparing the body to cars. There are cars that are fairly new, but their owners don&#8217;t take care of them, so they start running poorly long before they should. Then there are the cars that are decades old and still run like new. This is rarely due to luck. Instead it&#8217;s all about how the owner takes care of their car.</p>
<p>We can continue this analogy a bit further. The kind of fuel you put into your car makes all the difference. Sure, an economy model may be able to run on any brand of gasoline, but a fine-tuned sports car requires premium. All cars require regular maintenance as well. However, this analogy can only go so far, and there is one huge difference between the two. You can always trade in a car for a newer model, but you only get one body. Yet, too many people take much better care of their cars than themselves. Healthy eating is like putting the right kind of fuel in a car, but a car that you can never trade in.</p>
<p>Now, there are a lot of diets out there that promise to do this or that. Some claim that they can get you to lose weight the easy way, others are meant to prevent cancer, lower your cholesterol, or reduce the risk of various ailments. The truth is that some of them really do work for some people. But there are so many bad diets out there that it can be hard to figure out which ones are worth trying. You can actually try most diets, but there&#8217;s a catch. You need to know what counts as healthy eating first, then only use those parts of the diet that will be good for you.</p>
<p>Choices are what it&#8217;s all about. Let&#8217;s face it, most of us already have a pretty good idea regarding which foods we should eat and which foods we should avoid. For example, if you have a choice between eating a large chocolate doughnut and a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast; you would more than likely agree that eating the oatmeal was healthier. That doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t ever eat a doughnut. But if you do, you should think of it as an occasional snack, and not think of it as a nutritious breakfast. And that&#8217;s only one example. Just being aware of the choices you make is an excellent start to eating right.</p>

The less food you take, the fewer calories you store and the more calories lost you will get per day. Eating less sounds like a simple idea to follow but there is more you need to do.</p>
<p>A constant eating habit is first what you need to achieve. Naturally we would only need to eat three times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The snacks in between is optional depending per person. When you are on a diet, you need to train your body to accept food at a fixed time everyday. This is to tell your body when it should start working on the food you eat and prepare your body&#8217;s metabolism.</p>
<p>For each meal that you eat, you should plan to break them down into two. So Breakfast -&gt; Snacks -&gt; Lunch -&gt; Snacks -&gt; Dinner. You just need to have smaller portions for breakfast, lunch and dinner while eating healthy snacks to last in between. What this do is to let your body to fully burn all the calories that you eat and only store enough for the day. By breaking down your meals into smaller portion and more frequent, you would not have to worry about eating too much at one time.</p>
<p>When you have your meals, try having them with people. This social meal helps you to be more wary about the food you eat and also be able to be a role model for the children. When you eat in front of the computer or TV, it might lead to over eating. The snacks that you kept putting into your mouth will build up over time and causing you over eat.</p>
<p>When you eat, the first part of digestion is already happening when you start chewing in your mouth. The food is first broken down into smaller pieces and then passed to the stomach to finish up. So when you do not chew properly, bigger food chunks will enter the stomach and be poorly digested. This will leads to more fat formation in the body. Also, the body takes a while to process whether you are full or not. So if you eat and chew slower, you can let the body to process the information to the brain whether you should stop eating or not.</p>
<p>After your meal, do not go to sleep immediately. By doing that, you are telling the body to rest while there is still food inside your body. Partial digestion will leads to more fat. So actually try to walk around after your meal. This will keep the blood flowing so your body will be able to distribute the energy around your body more equally. This also means you should not eat 4 3-4 hours before you sleep. This is to let your body properly digest your dinner before preparing to go to sleep.</p>
